Meet Our Instructors
Over the years we have built one of the largest and most professional training teams in the industry with over 60 dedicated, full time safety trainers supporting United Academy augmented by 100’s of certified trainers and evaluators located in our branches throughout the US and Canada.
Doug has been with United Rentals for ten years and currently serves as District Trainer. In this capacity he has been instrumental in the development and implementation of the trench and confined space training programs offered today.
To enhance his abilities as an instructor, Doug has attained certifications including Georgia Tech’s Occupational Safety and Health Program for Competent Person - Trench and Excavation, and Confined Space Permit Entry (2008), the National Utility Contractor’s Association (NUCA) Train the Trainer Program (2009), and the ATSSA School for Traffic Control. His education and experience provides a unique ability to teach and engage students in his classes.
Doug resides in Burlington, NC and enjoys hunting and boating with his son Brandon. Doug served honorably in the US Marine Corp from 1983 to 1990.Back to Top
Gary’s goal is for everyone to utilize best safety practices at both work and home. With nearly four years in the equipment rental industry, he brings a well-rounded experience to his safety training courses. Gary is a certified American Heart Association First Aid/CPR instructor as well as a UA Certified Trainer on backhoes, skid steers, loaders, excavators, forklifts, and scissor and boom lifts. When he is not conducting training, he practices safety in his personal interests including motorcycle riding, restoring his old Corvette, and enjoying Jimmy Buffet music at the beach.Back to Top
Carl started with United Rentals in 2010 as an Inside Sales Representative and is currently serving as an Industrial Regional Customer Safety Trainer. Carl began his career in the United States Navy as a Seabee where he was a safety training officer for four of his eight years there. After working for Lowes as a forklift safety trainer he joined RSC where he was a Triple S instructor and a Master Trainer. He is currently a UA Certified Mobile Equipment Trainer.
Carl is known for his outgoing and charismatic personality. He has a passion for sharing his interests and presents the information in an easy, fascinating manner. Using his in depth industry knowledge he can convey the subject matter using real-life examples to provide his students with a more developed understanding.
Carl’s special interests include music, particularly playing drums, attending church regularly, and spending time with his family.Back to Top
Mark has been a construction health & safety professional for over twenty years in the environmental, nuclear, water & wastewater and defense segments, and maintains professional certifications issued through OSHA, US Army Corp of Engineers, and Board of Certified Safety Professionals.
Mark has traveled extensively throughout the United States representing engineers, equipment manufacturers, and contractors while managing corporate and project safety programs.
Witnessing first generation and constantly evolving construction technologies, Mark has forged a belief that training and experience is necessary to minimize the serious and predictable risks faced by construction workers every day. As a District Trainer for United Rentals, Mark blends the experience levels and safety perspectives of participants with technical subject matter to provide effective learning. Believing that together we can all share our experiences, we can all learn new ideas and notions, and we can all improve our commitment to safety.
Currently a resident of Maryland with wife Helen and two Chinese Shar Peis, Mark spends his spare time occupied by the excitement of motorsports, the spectacle of college football, and the relaxation of catching fish.Back to Top
Branden is the Division Safety Trainer for the St Louis, Missouri area and has been with United Rentals since 2005. He has held many branch positions throughout United Rentals, he started in the wash bay, worked as a mechanic, driver, ISR, Operations Manager, OSR, Dispatcher and most recently took on the role as the Division Safety Trainer. Branden is currently a Core 4 Trainer. He says, “I have worked for United Rentals in many different roles but I believe that I have found my calling as a Division Customer Safety Trainer”.
As a Safety Champion, Branden has been a large part of the safety culture at United Rentals - implementing processes that work and engaging the team to be safe and healthy. Branden is married and has an eight year old daughter. In his free time Branden enjoys music, ATV adventures and boating.Back to Top
Aaron Billings joined United Rentals in 2017 as a Division Safety Trainer. Prior to this he spent 15 years working in various positions in the Golf Course and Commercial Landscaping industries managing client relations, equipment purchasing and maintenance, and performing safety training for team members. His long experience leading maintenance and installation projects give Aaron a wide array of real life experiences to draw from. Along the way Aaron has become proficient in speaking Spanish and enjoys bridging communication gaps to make sure that all employees receive clear and high-quality safety training. Aaron is a UA Certified Trainer for counter balance, rough terrain forklifts, aerial boom lifts, scissor lifts, and fall protection. Aaron brings passion and enthusiasm to every class session.
When not in his work boots, Aaron enjoys spending time with his wife and son, preferably in the Outer Banks whenever possible. Aaron and his family reside in the West End of Henrico County, Virginia.Back to Top
Todd has been with United Rentals for over 25 years and during that time, has witnessed an increased focus on safety in our industry. The safety training program developed by United Rentals is unequaled in the industry and he is very proud to represent United Rentals as the Western Division Customer Safety Trainer covering Northern California and the Great Central Valley.
Todd is a UA Certified Master Trainer for counterbalance, rough terrain and narrow aisle forklifts, powered pallet trucks, aerial boom lifts, scissor lifts, loaders, backhoes, skid steers, excavators, and front end loaders. He is also an instructor with American Heart Association certified to teach First Aid, CPR and AED.
While keeping safety a priority, Todd likes to engage his trainees with personal stories and real life situations. He feels it is important to connect with his students, get everyone involved in topic discussions, and encourages any and all questions. Those who have experienced one of Todd’s classes say they feel confident with the training they received and had a good time while learning.
During his free time he likes to spend time with his wife, kids and grandkids and enjoys rooting for his hometown Raiders.Back to Top
Frances has been a Safety Trainer with United Rentals since May of 2016. Fran started in the Equipment Rental Industry in 2001 and has held many positions including Dispatcher, Logistics Manager, Inside Sales Representative and ISR trainer. She decided to become a safety trainer to help her team and others learn how to be safe and prevent fatalities.

Lee has been an active Certified Master Trainer for United Rentals since 2002. His concern for the safety of workers in our industry directed him on a career path towards the role of District Safety Officer for Northern California. Soon after, he was promoted to the position of Region Safety Manager for the Southwest Region. Mr. Braden also serves as a Faculty Member for the United Rentals American Heart Association (AHA) Training Center as well as an AHA Instructor.
Lee’s boots on the ground, or more importantly, his safety boots on the ground, real world experience spanning over three decades has resulted in the training experience, expertise and regulatory understanding he possesses today. His education, accomplishments and 30 plus years of industry experience also made him an ideal choice for lead subject matter expert during the creation the Core 4 online offering thru United Academy.
Lee resides near Sacramento, California with his wife and the younger daughter of two. The eldest daughter is married and lives nearby.Back to Top
Dave joined United Rentals in October 2009 after serving his country for 10 years in the Canadian Army. Quickly after being hired into United Rentals as district driver, Dave was promoted to the position of Inside Sales as well as took on the role of Safety Champion in our Fort Mac Murray branch. Safety is a way of life for Dave and he strongly agrees with our safety culture at United Rentals.
Becoming a Certified Ives Trainer in 2013, Dave believes that you can make any training interesting by encouraging classroom involvement. Dave is qualified to train the following programs: Boomlift, Scissor Lift, Counterbalance Forklift, Rough Terrain Forklift( Tele-Handler), Front-End Loader, Skid Steer, Back-Hoe, Excavator and Fall Protection. He has a vast knowledge of OSSA regulations, camp rules, and policies and equipment safety procedures.
Dave believes that family comes first and enjoys spending as much time as possible with his wife and two dogs in the great outdoors. He enjoys soccer, golf and umpiring baseball. He also likes watching and going to sporting events, especially the Calgary Stampeder’s and Toronto Blue Jays.Back to Top
John joined the United Academy in June 2018 as a division trainer covering the mid-Atlantic region.
John has been involved in the rental industry for 23 years. During this time, his responsibilities have included: inside sales, environmental safety, scaffolding and aerial lift training at the branch level in Upstate NY where he resides.
Drawing from his broad knowledge and background, life experiences and a passion to help others; he is able to share with customers real life practical examples to help them become safe operators thereby providing a safe work environment for all. And most importantly, leave the work site the same way they began their day.
John is a Certified Ives trainer for Aerial booms, scissors, rough terrain forklifts and counter balanced forklifts.
His interests include: hiking, fishing, playing guitar, renovating his house, visiting his children and sharing his faith.Back to Top
After graduating from St John’s University with a degree in computer science in 2001, Mike started his career in the construction industry as a Sales Coordinator. In 2004, he joined United Rentals and has held positions as an Internal Sales Rep, Parts Manager and Service Manager. Mike served as a branch and district Safety Champion for years. His passion for training enticed him to join the United Academy Training Team in a fulltime capacity and is now also qualified to teach operator training on forklifts, boom lifts, scissor lifts, excavators, backhoes, skid steers and wheel loaders. As a former Service Manager, he incorporates his vast knowledge of equipment and experience into his training classes.
When Mike is not training, you can find him running, biking, playing hockey or just spending time with his wife and two beagles where they reside in Aberdeen, NJ.Back to Top
Henry retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service. After leaving the Navy, Henry worked for two natural stone fabricators as their Logistics and Warehouse Manager. In 2011, Henry joined United Rentals and has worked in several positions including Inside Sales Rep, Operations Manager, Safety Champion and 5S Leader. Henry is certified to teach operator certification class on our Core 4® pieces of equipment to include counterbalanced forklifts, rough terrain forklifts, aerial boom lifts, scissor lifts and covers the Houston Metro Area.
Henry lives in Houston, TX with his wife and four children. When not busy with his son’s baseball or football teams, he enjoys fishing and golfing.Back to Top
After owning his own service station business for many years, Peter joined RSC Equipment Rentals in 1999. In 2007 Peter was promoted to Region Safety Trainer and currently supports the development of the United Rentals corporate Safety Training Program. In 2008, he became a UA Certified Mobile Equipment Trainer and in 2012 became an Ives Certified Master Trainer. Peter is an approved MSHA Instructor as per the provisions of 30 CFR, Part 48, subpart B; he is also a Fall Protection trainer, American Heart Association First Aid/CPR instructor, Rigger/Signal person instructor and is qualified to certify both trainers and operators on multiple pieces of mobile equipment.
Peter’s 14 plus years of safety education and training experience have resulted in a thorough understanding of the various safety regulations in Canada and strong working relationships within the industry.
Peter was born and raised in Alberta, Canada and resides in Calgary with his wife and son. In his spare time he enjoys time with his family in the mountains and traveling abroad.Back to Top
Russell just joined United Rentals in June 2015 as the Regional Safety Trainer for Oklahoma and Arkansas. As a Regional Safety Trainer, Russell is responsible for teaching and enforcing branch and operator safety. Russell’s background is very diverse, but his passion lies within Safety, making sure everyone goes home in the same condition as when they arrived that day. He has been a Regional Safety Trainer in the Oil & Gas Industry, a Construction site Superintendent, and has managed restaurants and fitness centers around the country.

Rod joined United Rentals as a Trainer for the Midwest District in February 2015. Passionate about Safety, Rod has 37 years of Medical, Construction, Industrial, and Commercial Safety Management experience.
Along with a degree in Law Enforcement, Rod’s background includes being a Police Officer, a Paramedic, and a Health Safety and Environmental Manager. His certifications include NSC First Aid/CPR, AED Instructor; Construction Health Safety Technician BCSP CHST; Safety Trained Supervisor – BCSP STS; Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer. He is a member of: National Safety Council, American Society of Safety Engineers and the Builders Association Safety group of Kansas City.
Residing in Kansas City with his beautiful wife of 40 years, Rod has two children and 8 grandchildren and is passionate about all of them and their activities. He also finds time to play golf with his wife and be involved with his Church. Suzette is a Division Safety Trainer for the East Region which includes Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. Her career with United Rentals started in 2001 in the Highway Tech Division where she was able to expand her safety training experience and knowledge working side by side with NYDOT Resident Engineers. Suzette continues her career with the General Rental and Aerial Divisions United Rentals Inc expanding hands on equipment knowledge. Suzette is a Certified Trainer on Forklifts (class 4,5 &7), Aerial Working Platforms and Fall Protection. To enhance real time knowledge related to the Construction Industry she attends conventions and symposiums regularly to stay proactively current with new OSHA policies and regulations. Suzette holds a TWIC access card for shipyards and military bases.
Suzette’s passion for safety has a contagious effect. She takes great pride in student’s safety and well-being. Suzette will bring real life stories and visual aids to connect with her students of all learning capabilities. She encourages questions and class participation to make training interesting and related to the customer’s work.
Suzette was born and raised in New England and currently she resides in the Greater Boston area. She loves the Patriots & Red Sox. Most of all she enjoys outdoor activities with her family and friends.Back to Top
Matt has been providing equipment operator training for United Rentals since 2011. In 2015 he was promoted to Pacific West Region Customer Safety Trainer. Matt is qualified to train First Aid/CPR/AED, MSHA New Miner and MSHA 8-hour Annual Refresher. Matt became a UA Certifed Master Trainer in 2015 and is qualified to train operators and trainers on multiple pieces of mobile equipment including: Counterbalance and Rough Terrain Forklifts, Aerial Boom and Scissor Lifts, Skid Steers, Backhoes, Front End Loaders, and Excavators.
Matt is based out of Hesperia, CA and responsible for customer and employee training throughout Southern California and Arizona.
Prior to joining United Rentals in 2002, Matt provided training in several capacities as a member of the Air Force where he oversaw training of new Airmen on various computer systems as well as standard safety operations. He has served as Branch Safety Champion for United Rentals for several years and believes that safety can truly save lives.

Yvonne has served in various positions including Safety Administrative Support, Safety Facilitator, and Safety Trainer in the Power, Oil & Gas, and Refinery industries since 2008.
Yvonne joined United Rentals in 2015 as the District Safety Trainer for the San Antonio/Laredo TX area. She is a UA Certified Instructor for the following equipment; Boom lift, Scissor lift, Counterbalance forklift, Rough terrain forklift, Skid steer, Excavator, Loader backhoe and Front loader; Certified H2S Instructor and PEC Safe Land Safe Gulf Instructor.

Seth started working for United Rentals in 2010 and has held positions as both an Inside Sales Rep and Dispatcher in Columbia, MO. He has been a certified trainer for boom lifts, scissor lifts, counter balance forklifts and rough terrain forklifts since 2013. In 2015, he accepted a fulltime training position with the South Division covering the Kansas City and Kansas districts.In his spare time, Seth is a volunteer firefighter and EMT with his local fire district, and enjoys photography.

Bobbie J Elzy
Bobbie is a District Safety Trainer based in Texas City, TX. He has been working in the rental industry for over 40 years and brings a wealth of knowledge and hand on experiences to his classroom. Bobbie is an Ives Certified Mobile Equipment Trainer and a UA Certified Master Trainer qualified to teach operators and prospective trainers on aerial boom and scissors lifts, counterbalance and rough terrain forklifts, skid steers, wheel loaders, mini-excavators, track excavators, backhoes, carry deck cranes, rigging and signal person, as well as first aid and CPR.
As a trainer he shares his enthusiasm, knowledge, experience and deep concern for everyone he trains. Bobby takes great pride in the students’ safety and well-being.
Bobby spends his free time with his wife, two daughters and their families and is very involved with his church and loves to watch a good game of basketball or football.Back to Top
Chris has been with United Rentals since 2014 and serves as the Regional Customer Safety Trainer for the New Jersey Area. Chris’ career in the equipment rental business spans over 30 years and has included positions including mechanic, service manager, service trainer and field service manager. Prior to United Rentals, Chris worked for a equipment manufacturer and taught United Rentals’ mechanics advanced hydraulics, electrical repair and how to troubleshoot mobile generator issues.
Chris is a UA Certified Master trainer qualified to train on all aerial equipment, rough terrain and counter balanced forklifts, as well as skid steers, loaders, backhoes, and excavators.
Chris resides in Jackson, NJ with his wife and has three grown children. In his free time, he enjoys visiting Key West, bow hunting, and taxidermy. He is an avid bow hunter and has hunted from Mexico to the Arctic Circle.
After a 25 year career as a CDL driver in the construction equipment rental business, Norm joined United Rentals 1998. In 2011 Norm became the Safety Officer at the Stoney Creek Ontario branch and soon became the Safety Awareness Trainer for our customers and employees.
Norm is a UA Certified Mobile Equipment Trainer, and qualified to also teach Fall Protection. He is also a Workplace Safety and Insurance Board certified Safety Committee member.
Norm’s vast knowledge and experience within the industry and with United Rentals makes him an ideal trainer for our employees and customers. His hands on experience with various rental equipment allow him to tailor the class to the specific needs of his students and the applications within their scope of work. He is a preferred trainer for a number of our customers, and is frequently recommended to other customers by his trainees. Norm has a reputation for being thorough yet approachable and down to earth.
In his spare time Norm enjoys golfing, watching documentaries on the Learning Channel, travelling, and spending time with family and friends.Back to Top
With more than 20 years of sales experience behind him, Mark joined United Rentals in 2008 as an Outside Sales Representative with our Sarnia, Ontario branch.
In 2017, Mark decided to follow his passion for training and transitioned into a new role as a Division Safety Trainer.He is currently a certified Core-4 trainer for Aerial Boom lifts, Scissor lifts, Counterbalance and Rough Terrain forklifts.Mark’s many years of sales and training experience allows him to deliver customer focused training with an inviting, professional approach.

Felix has worked in the rental industry since 2000 and joined United Rentals in 2003. While at United Rentals his level of responsibility increased from CDL transport driver to inside sales and in 2009, was promoted to Operations Manager in Naples, FL.
Felix became a full time trainer in 2015 and is certified to train on counterbalance and rough terrain forklifts, boom lifts and scissor lifts, loaders, excavators, backhoes, skid steers and fall protection. Felix can personalize each class to meet your specific training needs because of his vast experience in the industry at different levels. He speaks English and Spanish fluently and teach classes in both languages.

Diego joined United Rentals in 2005 as a technician in Annapolis, MD. Shortly thereafter, Diego was promoted to an Inside Sales Representative position and became a First/Aid instructor and Facility Safety Champion. Diego is currently a fulltime safety trainer for United Academy based in Annapolis covering Maryland, Delaware, Washington DC and Northern Virginia and qualified to teach equipment operator certification courses.
Prior to joining United Rentals in 2005, Diego worked as a Warehouse forklift operator and floor manager for five years with an impeccable safety record.Back to Top
Kris Graham joined United Rentals Trench Safety in 1997 as an Outside Sales Representative working with the various shoring systems and was involved with projects from just a few feet deep to 80 feet underground. He was involved in the development of the Excavation Training Program that United Rentals uses today. Kris has always thought teaching the OSHA Standards was an important component of a good safety program and he became a full-time Customer Training Specialist for the Trench Safety Division 2-years ago. This has allowed him to train in over 30-states.
Literally starting from the ground up in the construction industry, Kris was hired as a pipe layer 35 years ago. In 1985, the pipeline company had a fatal trench cave-in that OSHA used as one of the case studies to develop the Sub Part-P Excavation Standard. The cave-in had a big impact on Kris and is a large part of why he believes so strongly in the importance of safety training.
Kris is certified to train Competent Person for Excavation Safety, Confined Space Entry and 10 and 30 hour classes through the OSHA Institute, and is also a Certified Instructor for American Heart Association First Aid /CPR/AED.
In his free time, Kris enjoys taking their motorhome out with friends and family to ride dirt bikes and ATVs in Colorado and Utah. On weekends he still enjoys working on his ‘65 Mustang and going out for a drive with his wife of 39 years.Back to Top
Ryan started with United Rentals in 2004 as an equipment associate. Since then he has held a variety of positions including driver, inside sales rep, central dispatch and operations supervisor. Ryan prides himself with being an excellent communicator and listener. He enjoys the challenge of being a Division Safety Trainer and delivering training that is focused on a culture of safety.
Ryan is married and has three daughters. In his spare time Ryan enjoys golf, poker, watching NFL and hiking and camping with his family.

Bob joined United Rentals as a Corporate Safety Trainer in 2010 after a 31 year career in telecommunications sales and project management followed by two years as Manager, Special Projects for an international uranium mining company. Bob is an approved MSHA Instructor as per the provisions of 30 CFR, Part 48, subpart B; he is also a Fall Protection trainer, American Heart Association First Aid/CPR instructor, and is qualified to certify both trainers and operators on multiple pieces of mobile equipment.
Bob’s background in project management and training experience in the areas of effective speaking, team building, coaching, safety, and diversity make him a welcome addition to the corporate safety training team.
Bob resides in Saskatchewan, Canada with his wife and dog named Ali. In his spare time he enjoys spending time at his lake cottage during the summer months and throughout the long cold Canadian winter he organizes and plays hockey in various leagues.Back to Top
After serving in the U.S. Army, Sean received a degree in education from Marshall University. He then moved to north Georgia in 2000 and was a teacher and coach for 12 years. Sean joined United Rentals in 2012 as an ISR in Cleveland, TN.
In his role as Division Safety Trainer, Sean uses his Army experience and education/coaching background to connect with his students. Sean encourages classroom participation and questions to keep the classes entertaining, interesting, and fun. He is certified in Fall Protection, aerial, forklifts, and dirt equipment.

Diana has worked in the Oil and Gas Industry and Refineries since 2006. Prior to pursuing her passion for Safety Training, she worked as a Safety Professional , Electrician and served as an Attendant in Confined Space operations. Throughout her career Diana has served in numerous Safety positions and has accumulated OSHA Certifications to train workers in various Safety Courses.
Diana has established credentials from the ICTP (Instructor Certification Training Program) and received from the National Center for Construction Education and Research board her Construction Site Safety Masters Certification in 2015 for the Southeast, TX region. Diana enjoys helping in community services and spending time with family and friends.Back to Top
Victor Hernandez joined United Rentals in 2016 as a District Trainer for the Southeast, having been in the construction industry for over 30 years. As an OSHA Authorized Construction Trainer, Victor’s background includes experience in Landfill Closure, Underground Utilities, and all phases of Construction. He teaches our Excavation Safety for Competent Persons, Confined Spaces in Construction, OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 Outreach classes in both Spanish and English.
Previously Victor worked at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on renovations of concourse C and D, new construction of CONRAD (consolidation of rental cars and parking building) and the new International concourse. He also was the Assistant Safety-Manager for Austin-HITT JV on the renovation of Charleston International Airport.
A fan of all of South Florida Sports teams (Heat, Marlins, Dolphins, Hurricanes), Victor loves to fish, and is a Salsa dance instructor in his spare time.Back to Top
Cal entered the rental industry in 2011 and served as an Inside Sales Rep, Safety Champion, and 5S Leader. Through these positions he developed a keen interest in safety training and became a United Academy Certified Evaluator and subsequently a Certified Trainer. At his home branch in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan Cal introduced many local customers to the United Academy training program teaching aerial, forklift, dirt, and fall protection operator certification courses.
Away from work, Cal enjoys spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Bill started with United Rentals in 2004. He has held several positions including: Inside Sales Representative, Safety Officer and handled the Disneyland Account for 2 years based at the park. Bill is now based out of our Montclair, CA location where there is a strong emphasis on training. Bill earned his Certified Trainer certification, and can train operators for aerial boomlift, scissor lift, counterbalance forklift and rough terrain forklift.
Bill enjoys working with people to make sure they are safe and trained properly. Bill brings sales experience and training experience into his new position. Bill has been married for 19 years and has 2 wonderful children. He enjoys spending time with my family and traveling.

Jim joined United Rentals in 2002 as a CDL A driver in Branch 190 in Brampton Ontario. He has a strong commitment to safety and served as a branch safety champion and safety committee member for several years. Jim became a part-time Certified Safety Trainer and Evaluator in 2014 and was promoted to the full time Division Safety Trainer position in 2016 - supporting the Ontario area in eastern Canada.

He is certified trainer for Aerial Boom lifts, Scissor lifts, Forklifts (Class 1, 2,3,4,5 and 7) Dirt Equipment (Skid Steer, Backhoe, Excavator and Wheel loaders) as well as Fall Protection Working at Heights (Ontario).

Michael graduated from the University South Carolina of Aiken, in 2011 with a degree in Marketing and gained experience in many different fields along the way. Michael was in front of key customers at every position, which he vastly enjoys.
Michael started with United Rentals, in 2015, as an Inside Sales Representative. He then became a Certified Evaluator for the Augusta, GA branch and trained many local customers and employees. Michael recently decided to make training a full time job, being certified to train on Aerial Boomlift, Scissor Lift, Counterbalance Forklift, Rough Terrain Forklift, Excavator, Backhoe Loader, Skid Steer, Front End Loader, Fall Protection and First Aid/CPR. He is always looking forward to helping customers understand how to safely operate the equipment and skills that United Rentals & United Academy offer.

Dave’s passion for safety and need to make a difference started in college when he witnessed a gruesome construction accident. Dave knew then he had to find a way to use his education, communication skills, and experience to make a difference for workers, employers, and their families.
Dave has spent over 20 years in the rental industry working in all positions from the yard to branch manager and rental company owner. He then went on to safety consulting and training on a full time basis, building a successful consulting and training organization. Along the way he earned numerous trainer and master trainer certifications, including OSHA instructor, Master Equipment instructor-trainer, and transportation trainer, safety professional.
As a United Rentals trainer for the last 8 years, Dave enjoys teaching the following courses: Train the trainer and operator training for Forklifts, Aerial Equipment, Dirt Equipment as well as First Aid/CPR, Fall Protection, OSHA 10 and 30 hour, Transportation Safety: Commercial Driver Safety, vehicle inspection, Drug and Alcohol compliance.
When Dave is not in the classroom he enjoys spending his time with family, especially his three grown children and the 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.Back to Top
Renee joined the United Rentals team in 2006 with 14 years of healthcare related experience. During her United Rentals tenure, she has worked in the Pump Power & HVAC, Aerial, and General Rental divisions in various positions and with a multitude of key account customers. Renee currently serves as the Division Training Manager for the Southeast and Carolina Regions. Her knowledge and experience within the industry makes her an ideal Safety Trainer and allows her to tailor her training classes to the specific needs of her students and the applications within their scope of work. Renee has a strong emphasis of making every training session informative and fun so everyone learns the importance of safety for home and work.

Mike joined the United Rentals team in 2014 and served as an Inside Sales Rep and Purchasing Agent at the Annapolis, Maryland branch. Mike came to United Rentals from the airline industry where the safety of both passengers and crew were his number one priority. He is a certified trainer and evaluator on boom and scissor lifts, all seven classes of forklifts, skid steers, front end loaders, excavators and backhoes. He has a strong passion for all things safety and helping others through education.
Mike enjoys spending his free time with his family, going to concerts and rooting for the Baltimore Ravens, Washington Capitals and the Maryland Terrapins.

Ric started with United Rentals in 2011 and served in several branch positions of increased responsibility prior to becoming a West Division trainer in 2015. Ric’s experience in his different branch roles provided him with the insights and experience to provide training to hundreds of operators since 2012.
Ric is a trainer of Core 4 equipment including Boom Lifts, Scissor Lifts, Counterbalance and Rough Terrain Forklifts as well as dirt equipment including Skid Steers, Excavators, Loader Back Hoes and Front End Loaders. Ric is also certified to provide Fall Protection training.

Christopher joined United Rentals in 2010 as a Driver and Safety Champion in British Columbia, Canada. Chris was later promoted to District Safety Coordinator in 2013 leading BC to an Injury free year. He is a Certified Master Trainer and Certified Master Evaluator for United Academy and delivers courses that are captivating with experience and knowledge on Regulations and Safety Practice. In 2015 Chris was promoted to Division Safety Training Manager for Western Canada, leading a team of top quality trainers.
He is also qualified as a Master Trainer to train operators on multiple pieces of mobile equipment including: Counterbalance and Rough Terrain Forklifts, Aerial Boom and Scissor Lifts, Skid Steers, Backhoes, Front End Loaders, Excavators, Fall Protection and also Train the Trainer for your in house instructors.

Dennis joined United Rentals in 2013 as an Inside Sales Representative in the greater Chicago area. Since then, in addition to working in the Parts Department, he was a branch Safety Champion and United Academy Certified Evaluator. In 2015 he was promoted to Regional Safety Trainer. Dennis has over nine years of experience in the car and heavy equipment rental industry’s during which he developed a passion for teaching safe equipment operations. Being a Regional Safety Trainer, Dennis taps into his earlier academic career to become a history teacher and is able to incorporate effective teaching methods into his programs to reach students of various backgrounds.
In his leisure time, Dennis enjoys baking pies and playing various sports such as tennis, soccer, and basketball.Back to Top
Jeff joined United Rentals in 2008 as an Inside Sales Representative in the Dallas Ft Worth area. Since then he has served as an Outside Sales Representative and District Safety Coordinator. Prior to joining United Academy Jeff had over 20 years of experience in sales, operations management and real estate. As a Safety Coordinator, Jeff was responsible for teaching and enforcing branch safety. During those years he developed a passion for training operators for both United Rentals and its customers to a higher level of understanding of equipment and safe operation. Today, Jeff is a full time safety trainer for United Academy serving the state of Texas.
Jeff is married to Jo and has 6 children and 12 grandchildren. Jeff enjoys photography, woodworking and travel.Back to Top
Kevin has nearly 30 years of experience in the construction rental industry. During that time he spent 20 years as a service tech and supervisor and 3 years as a sales representative. He also spent 8 years as a part time environmental health and safety coordinator and over 4 years as a full time safety education trainer.
Kevin has been married for 26 years and has grown children. He enjoys boating, hiking and golf, when he finds the time, in the Adirondack mountains of upstate NY.Back to Top
Brad joined United Rentals in 2012 as an Inside Sales Representative servicing the oil field in Dickinson, ND. Since then, he supported the Parts Department, was a branch Safety Champion, promoted to Operations Manager and most recently promoted to Regional Safety Trainer. Brad has over four years of experience in the heavy equipment rental industry during which he developed a passion for teaching safe equipment operations. As a Regional Safety Trainer, Brad taps into his experience as a 4-H leader and is able to incorporate effective teaching methods into his programs to reach students of various backgrounds. Brad provides training on Boomlifts, Scissor Lifts, Rough Terrain Forklifts, Counterbalance Forklifts, and Fall Protection.

Joseph (Joe) Nuzum
Joe joined United Rentals as Manager, Region Customer Safety and Training in 2013 after a career in the IT industry as a Project Manager, Business Analyst and a computer programmer. Prior to that, Joe spent eight years as a police officer where he was certified to teach a variety of courses to civilians.
Joe is a UA Certified Instructor for forklifts, telehandlers, boom and scissor lifts, and dirt equipment. In his spare time, Joe works as a disc jockey for 106.5 The Wolf in Kansas City and performs on and off stage with many community theatre groups in the Kansas City area.Back to Top
Tim has been with United Rentals since 2004 and has been a UA Certified Trainer for over 10 years. He is also a UA Certified Master Trainer.
Tim has an extensive background in equipment service. As a factory trained technician he is qualified to maintain, troubleshoot and repair any and all machines that United Rentals rents. This, combined with his service manager experience mentoring mechanics, allows him to help trainees better understand how the service aspects of equipment affect their operational skills.
Tim’s goal is to make his classes entertaining and informal and it’s important for him to get to know his students in order to conform his teaching around their individual job and level of expertise. His extensive knowledge of machinery is a huge asset in his current role as Regional Safety Trainer. Upon completion of the training course, his students are prepared to efficiently perform their jobs with increased safety and effectiveness, while decreasing liability exposure to themselves and their employer.

Matthew H. Owen
Matthew is a graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University with a degree in Marketing. He began his career in the heavy equipment industry in 2004 growing from an inside rental consultant and parts manager position to service manager prior to becoming a regional trainer. Matthew is currently a Corporate Safety Trainer serving the needs of the U.S. and Canada. Matthew is a UA Master Trainer for forklifts, aerial lifts, earthmoving equipment, and cranes. He is also certified to teach Fall Protection, Rigging and Signaling, The American Heart Association for First Aid/ CPR, and MSHA 30 CFR Part 48.
Matthew resides in Louisiana and enjoys camping, fishing, family time with his wife and two children, and working on old cars.Back to Top
After spending over ten years in the military, Austin received a degree in Theology and began a career in heavy equipment. After working his way through the ranks from service manager to branch manager he was bitten by the safety calling in 1996 and was continuously promoted to his current position as District Safety Trainer.
Austin is a UA Certified Trainer Mobile Equipment trainer and a Certified Master Trainer. His many years of experience in safety and mobile equipment training help operators acquire the knowledge and training needed to operate equipment safely and in compliance with all regulatory requirements.
Austin is originally from Alabama but currently resides in Houston Texas with his wife and two of his three children; the oldest is serving his country in the Air Force. He enjoys playing golf every chance he gets, cooking and spending time with his family and friends.Back to Top
Eric has been with United Rentals Trench Safety division for fourteen years initially serving as an outside sales representative and the last 4 most months recently as a District Trainer. He was a part of the team that developed the first URTS Confined Space course. He was also a team member with the group that developed the Confined Space in Construction course currently in use. Prior to his career in trench safety, Eric was an EMT Advanced Life Support provider for five years and a Teaching Assistant for the EMT program at a junior college for eight years. Using that prior experience has been helpful being able to partner with Fire Training officers and offer Excavation/Trench Rescue Competent Person for Fire Departments.
Eric was certified to train Competent Person for Excavation Safety, and Confined Space Entry classes through the OSHA Institute of San Diego. He is also an authorized outreach instructor for both OSHA 10 & OSHA 30 along with the Cal OSHA 10 hour course.
Living in California with his wife, four children and two grandchildren and two dogs, he enjoys volunteering in his community, playing softball, camping and anything else outdoors-related.Back to Top
Rick joined United Rentals-Trench Safety in January 2018 and will be supporting the Mid-Central District based in Indianapolis, IN. Prior to joining United Rentals, Rick spent 18 years in the Equipment Rental Industry as a Rental Coordinator, Sales Representative, Branch Manager, and Region Process Improvement Manager. During that time, he routinely conducted Aerial and Forklift Operator training. Rick is a Six Sigma Green Belt, and is formally trained in Lean Manufacturing Techniques. Rick earned his B.A. in Communications from Eastern Illinois University. Rick has a passion for educating and training and currently instructs Excavation Safety Training for Competent Persons (CPT) and Confined Space Entry Training (CSE).
When not conducting classes, Rick enjoys hockey, baseball, football, and singing with his wife as an acoustic duet.Back to Top
After years in the medical industries, Jason decided to enter the equipment industry with United Rentals in 2005. He started in an inside sales rep position where he learned the rental business and equipment. A few years later, Jason got involved in safety and became well versed in the OSHA safety regulations as they pertain to the construction industry. Deciding that he wanted to teach others what became his passion, Jason became a UA Certified Trainer in 2011 for aerial boom and scissor lifts, and counterbalanced and rough terrain forklifts. He has also added backhoes, excavators, skid steers, front end loaders, and more forklift classes to his arsenal.
Jason’s experience using various makes and models of equipment allows him to train not only the basics of safe equipment operations, but how the models differ from one another, their different safety features, and real life stories to bring the training to life.
Jason is a true outdoorsman and enjoys hunting, kayaking, camping, and sports. He also loves spending time with family, friends, and his animals.
Brad joined United Rentals in December of 2011 as an equipment associate at our Brampton, ON location. Later he moved to branch E90 in Etobicoke, ON. During this time, Brad’s knowledge of the equipment grew as he had the opportunity to work both with technicians as well as customers. While in Etobicoke, Brad was able to nurture his growing passion for Health and Safety as Safety Champion and participating in the Joint Health and Safety Committee Meetings. In 2013 Brad became an Inside Sales Rep and later became a member of the Sales Support Team.
Brad’s time working with the equipment and with our customers will serve him well as he grows in his new role as Division Safety Trainer. He is currently a certified Core-4 trainer for Aerial Boom lifts, Scissor lifts, Counterbalance and Rough Terrain forklifts.

David has worked in the Equipment rental industry for 26 years. In that time he has been a store manager, an OSR, and recently worked the last five years as an Operations Supervisor at the Phillips Refinery onsite in Ferndale, Washington.
He is now a Core 4 Trainer working in the Washington District.

Jeff has been with United Rentals since 2013 after spending 12 years in the US Army infantry where he was responsible for multiple aspects of training and safety including rappel master, range cadre, and many aspects of soldier training.
Jeff is a UA Certified Mobile Equipment Trainer on counterbalanced and rough terrain forklifts, and aerial boom and scissor lifts.
Jeff likes to bring real life stories and visual aids to connect with his students. He encourages questions, class interaction, and sharing knowledge and past experiences. In addition, he brings over 10 years of public speaking and training experience which gives him the unique ability to make the training entertaining and enjoyable which allows for a more conducive learning environment.

Keith’s career in the equipment rental business spans over 18 years, and has included positions including store operations, management, and sales. His passion for training started in 2012, when he was awarded a position in United Rentals’ corporate training department. In this position he traveled the country training and supporting the deployment of our cutting edge dispatch and distribution hand held computer system. In 2013, he was awarded the position of Regional Trainer for customer safety in the Gulf South region.
Keith’s experience in the equipment business allows him the ability to relate to the challenges that mobile equipment operators face on a daily basis, and tailors his curriculum in an effort to drive home safety as it relates to their trade.
He is a UA Certified Trainer, providing training on all aerial equipment, rough terrain and counter balanced forklifts, as well as skid steers, loaders, backhoes, and excavators. He is also certified to provide rigging and signal person training.
Based out of the New Orleans metro area, Keith resides in Covington LA with his wife and three children and enjoys family time and watching his boys play sports.Back to Top
Daniel joined the rental industry in 2006 and has been providing mobile equipment training for customers and employees since 2007. In 2013 he was promoted to the position of Mid-Atlantic Regional Customer Safety Trainer, and in 2017 to Training Manager – Mid Atlantic.
Daniel has been providing safety training, in some capacity, since joining the Navy in 1996 where he oversaw ship-board fire/flood training and maintenance on those systems. Daniel believes that safety training truly saves lives and improves productivity.
After an extensive series of trips and adventures around the world, Daniel calls “Wild and Wonderful” West Virginia home, where he was born. He enjoys time with family, friends and WVU Basketball.Back to Top
Ryan attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Safety, Health, and Environmental Applied Sciences in 2014. He is a safety practitioner and committed to protecting and ensuring the safety and welfare of our customers and co-workers while enforcing occupational safety regulations.
Ryan trains in the Mid-Atlantic region, covering West Virginia, Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio and is qualified to teach trainings on class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 &7 forklifts, aerial boom lift and aerial scissor lift.

Steve joined United Rentals in 2014; he started his career as an Inside Sales Representative in Cheyenne, WY. In 2015 Steve became a Certified Trainer and was transferred to his hometown, Grand Rapids, MI. Steve had many roles including branch Safety Champion and Equipment Associate where he learned a lot about operating equipment. Prior to joining United Rentals Steve served 11 years in the United States Air Force where he helped train troops in security operations and law enforcement.
In May 2017, Steve was promoted to Division Safety Trainer. He is certified to train operators on Counterbalance Forklift, Rough Terrain Forklift, Boom Lift, Scissor Lift, Narrow Aisle Forklift, Powered Pallet Jack, and Fall Protection. When not working. Steve enjoys riding his motorcycle and spending time with his family. They like to watch movies, play card games, and spend time with friends.Back to Top
Holly joined United Rentals in 2007 in the Service Department as a Service Writer and has since also served as an Accounts Receivable, Parts Associate and Warranty Specialist. In 2013 Holly began serving as Safety Champion & Training Coordinator for our Ontario East District.
Holly is a Core 4 Certified Trainer and is a member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee in Ontario, Canada. In early 2016 Holly was promoted to Divisional Safety Trainer for the East Division servicing the markets of Greater Southern Ontario.
Holly enjoys spending time with her family camping, boating, motorcycling and being at the lake.
Darcy joined United Rentals in 2017. With over 20 years of experience training in the lumber as well and oil and gas industries, Darcy has demonstrated a commitment to safety in his various roles throughout North America as well as overseas.
As a Division Safety Trainer, Darcy uses his experience to lead highly interactive training sessions covering Aerial Boom Lifts, Scissor Lifts, Forklifts, Variable Reach Forklifts & Fall Protection for Quebec as well as Working at Height in Ontario.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family and friends especially around a table for a nice meal after a snowboarding or wakeboarding day
Barry started his career in the rental industry over 20 years ago, having worked in several locations throughout Western Canada, and served in various positions from CDL Driver to Branch Manager. Barry is certified to teach operator training on various types of mobile equipment Including boom lifts, scissor lifts, rough terrain forklifts, counterbalanced forklifts, front end loaders, excavators, backhoe loaders and skid steers. He is also a certified National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) as well as Construction Safety Specialist (BCCSA).
These certifications coupled with his extensive industry experience allow him to approach teaching in a relaxed and professional manner.
When not working, he can be found on his Harley with his wife.

David joined United Rentals in 2015 as a Sales Associate in Indianapolis, Indiana and was given the added role of Safety Champion at his local branch where he found a passion for safety and hazard awareness. Formerly an elementary school teacher, David was used to “on the job hazards,” but of a different variety! David was able to deepen his sales experience and equipment knowledge through the United Rentals Sales Associate program by working with customers and selling used equipment. David was promoted to Division Safety Trainer in 2016 where he is able to tap into his teaching roots and energetically deliver instruction on a variety of equipment as well as fall protection.
In his free time David enjoys leading his family, wife Katie and daughter Lucy, in outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, hammocking and going to church.Back to Top
Jim joined United Rentals in 1999 and has served as a Certified Trainer since 2006. He became at Certified Master Trainer in 2015. Jim trains potential operators and trainers on Aerial Boomlifts, Scissor Lifts, Telehandlers, Counter balanced Forklifts, Excavators, Loader Backhoe, Skid Steer Loaders and Wheel Loaders. He is also a Fall Pro and First Aid/ CPR Instructor.
Prior to becoming a safety trainer, Jim was a delivery driver for 22 years and feels that his experience operating all types of equipment on various jobsites gives him the ability to identify with his trainees and the challenges they face.
Jim knows that good training answers 3 questions: What, How and most importantly, Why? As trainers, we need to make sure the trainee understands what to do to operate the equipment safely, how to operate the equipment safely, and most importantly why to operate the equipment safely. Creating safe operators is Jim’s mission.
